Today, we found a little path.
And though there was laundry in the hamper at home, waiting to be folded, and flashcards in a mess all over the living room floor, and a pot in the sink with burned-on oatmeal that was my reason for procrastinating doing any of the breakfast dishes, we took the little path.
We took the little path and we found a bridge with trolls underneath, and a pond with snails. We found a barn, red, with rafters fit for swinging, and a fountain of cold water for adventure-thirsty throats.
Even though at home there was dinner to be made and piano scales to practice and an exercise routine that has been hopelessly neglected, we took the little path.
We took the little path and we found a jungle of monkey bars. We found swings that fly up to heaven and swoop to earth again, like swallows. We found giggles and running feet and outside voices.
Even though at home, there was a writing lesson to complete and a table set with textbooks where the dinner plates should be. At home there was a dishwasher to unload and that confounded pot waiting to be scrubbed.
But today, we found a little path. And we took it.

we always take the little path on our way to school and home. Walking to school allows us to take many different paths and discover new things everyday. It’s my favorite part of the days

Given the choice between burned on oatmeal or a new path to explore – I’ll take the path every time! 🙂 Besides, the kids will remember the path, not the oatmeal!!!

And this is what makes parenting enchanting. 🙂

Yes, it is! It is enchanting to watch them scamper and explore. I think to myself, “These are the days memories are made of.”

Thank you so much for sharing this… I often fight so hard between taking that little path and doing all the mundane things that need to be done at home, I always want to take the little path but struggle with always feeling behind on something, or many things at home. I just know that having an empty laundry hamper and a clean sink isn’t what my kids or I will look back with fondness on. Thanks 🙂

Lovely!
Oh and for that burned-on oatmeal…take a used dryer sheet and let it soak for thirty minutes in soapy water in your pan. The oatmeal will slide right out. I am not sure why it works but it does! So now I save all my used dryer sheets from the MANY loads of laundry I do for those days that I procrastinated soaking my dishes after a meal. 🙂
Blessings!
