Today, I held a little boy on my lap. He grasped a book in his hand and kept some by his side for back-ups.
He came to me while the lunch dishes were being cleared and asked me to read him a book. “Two or three books,” he corrected when he realized I might be inclined to say yes.
I sat on the floor and a little boy who no longer has dimples on his hands sat in my lap. A little boy who used to fit there as if in a little nest sprawled out his legs in front of him because he doesn’t quite fit there anymore.
We read Are You My Mother? and a book that was far too scary for him but he said it wasn’t. I don’t know how going on a bear hunt can not be too scary. But he’s big.
He’s getting so, so big.
I smelled his hair and kissed the back of his neck. He smelled sweetly sweaty, the way little boys do after they’ve been wrestling their brothers, the way baby boys do when you nurse them in the summer and the heat from their bodies against yours makes the sweetest smell you’ve ever known.
Someday, he’ll smell big-boy sweaty, and that’s a different thing entirely.
But not now. Now, he is still a bit of my baby boy. He wants to climb up on my lap and read stories. And on this beautiful day, I think this is the part of motherhood I like best.

This is something that I miss – when you guys were little and we’d all sit on the couch after naptime, reading books together until your dad came home from work. Good times!

I love my girlies, but there’s something extra-sweet about a momma and her boy. And although I intend to always hug and love on my daughters, I know a day is coming that a brief squeeze from my man-son will be very precious to me and more appropriate.

🙂 That brings a tear of happiness to my eye… Reminds me of sitting down and reading “Love You Forever” the first time. With my two youngest (boys, 5 and 2 at the time) sitting in my lap. I was bawling so hard by the end I couldn’t read the last page, LOL! Oh…how the time goes so very fast.

I love it when my boys cuddle up to me. Tim backs up to me with books asking to read. I love it and cherish these moments too! I agree, I love the little boy scent.

I love this! I have 3 boys 3 and under and my oldest still loves to sit in my lap and be read to! I just love getting to cuddle him! Sweet boys!

I still read to my nine year old boy even though he can very well do it himself. It’s one of ‘our’ things.
I can read books that are beyond his reading level but not his understanding level, and books that are daunting because there are just too many words on the pages and too many pages. It’s something be both enjoy.
However we usually do it after his shower 🙂
