100 Things About Me, Items 21-30

It’s been awhile since I’ve added on to my 100 Things About Me posts, started here.  I was hoping I’d become more interesting with the passing months, but alas.  I think I peaked at 25.  Nevertheless, here’s another little look into the life of Kristen Glover (that’s me).

21) I play the flute.  By “play,” I mean I have a flute, in my closet, where it’s been since high school.  Sometimes I look at it.

I could totally play that, if I wanted.

22) After high school, I spent the better part of a year working with street kids and orphans in Mexico.  I have a huge heart for foster care and adoption because of that experience.

Let’s play “find the alien!”

23) Shortly after arriving in Mexico, my documentation was stolen, including my freshly-stamped visa, birth certificate, Social Security card, and driver’s license.  You’ve probably never known anyone who was an illegal alien on that side of the boarder.   Good thing I blend in.

Common Varieties of
“Oh my gosh, someone please kill that thing”

24) I have not reconciled my differences with cockroaches after spending many weeks working in a border-town orphanage.  Similarly, I will never own a pet rat.

Sorry, Crickwing. Cockroaches are vile.           The end.

25) I threw out the book Crickwing.  I did not even feel guilty about it.

26) I keep Tabasco sauce in my purse.  It fends off cockroaches.  It’s also yummy.

Roach killer or flavorful seasoning?
You decide.

27) After Mexico, I went back to the Philippines, and after the Philippines, I went to college (finally) in Chicago.

College days=coffee haze

28) I packed 4 years of college into 2 ½.  I graduated summa cum laude with a degree in Print Media Communications.

29)  In other words, I wrote stuff–quickly–and drank a lot of coffee.  I think I also planned a wedding.

I could totally stop drinking that, if I wanted.

30) I paid my way through college by working as a nanny for some of the most generous people I have ever known.  As a bonus for playing with their sweet little boy in the evenings and weekends, they paid for my last semester of college.  All these years later, that little boy still toddles into my dreams.  I think often of that family with immense gratitude.  May God return many blessings upon them!

My budding career as a nanny.
This is me in the Philippines with a kid I don’t dream about.

Coming soon(er)!  Ten more things about me!

100 Things About Me, Items 11-20

Part 2 in a series of 100 Things About Me.  Read the first 10 items  here.

11) I am an only child.  I mean, I’m the only GIRL.  Growing up, I thought that meant the same thing.

Photo evidence that I am an only child.

12) I love flying.  I get it from my dad.

A very tall man in a very little plane. Everybody point!

13)  Even though I’ve gotten to fly in lots of different planes, I really want to ride in one of these:

Anyone have one I can borrow?

14) My parents were missionaries in the Philippines, where everybody spoils white kids by giving them water buffaloes.   I mean candy.

Where’s MY water buffalo?

15) We lived on a coffee plantation and climbed cocoa trees for fun.  I know.  This explains a lot.

Forget about the toothless kid. That’s a COFFEE tree I’m standing by!

16) I am not responsible for my addictions (see #15).  I like my coffee light and my chocolate dark.

Best coffee mug caption ever.

17) My dream is to take my family back to the Philippines.  In a hot air balloon.

The view from the hot air balloon is spectacular!

18) While in the Philippines, my older brother and I went away to boarding school during the week.  Ron and Sandy Lashuay were our dorm parents, and their three kids were the best playmates.

I am not in this picture. I am around back eating coffee beans.

19)  My dad was killed in a car accident when I was eleven.  He’s been busy praising Jesus ever since.

Finally free.

20) My Aunt Sandy Lashuay, as we called her, died when I was 19, after a long and horrible battle with cancer.  She was incredibly brave.  God brought my mom and Ron together and joined our two families and gave us “beauty for ashes, strength for fear, kindness for mourning, peace for despair.” (Crystal Lewis)

My mom has great taste in men. Just like her daughter.

100 Things About Me, Items 1-10

Some of you think my “About Me” page is lacking in actual content about me.  I’ve noticed that many blogs include a fun list called 100 Things About Me.  I’ve read some of them, but my eyes usually glaze over around #20.  I think it’s better to take me in smaller chunks.  Let’s begin with ten.

This is me.

1). This is me. I know what you’re thinking.  I look way too young to have five children.

This is Jeff. I like him.

2) I dated my husband less than two weeks before we got engaged. Best. Decision. Ever.

(not our first kiss)

3) He didn’t kiss me or tell me he loved me until another 2 weeks after we got engaged.

4) We have been married for over eleven years.

He was so worth waiting 2 weeks for. Also note what happens when highlights go bad.

5) We met in college.  I earned my BA in Print Media Communications.  But I stink at Scrabble.

6) At 6′, I am taller than the average man.  I’m okay with this, unlike the average man.

Look at that giant woman! She's much taller than the man. I hope she doesn't step on that poor child.

7) I do not play any sports ending in the word “ball.”  I believe it promotes a false stereotype about tall women.

8) My husband is 1″ taller than me.  He passed the litmus test.  Barely.

She was breech. That's all I can say about that.

9) My first baby was breech.  We tried to turn her.  I think she was pretty upset about that for the first nine months of her life.

10) I home school my kids.  This is code for, “If I want, I can I stay in my jammies until noon.”
